AM&O Towing is an Ohio River based barge-shipment services provider, operating primarily in the Huntington and Pittsburgh Districts, with docks on the river in East Liverpool, Ohio. We handle large bulk commodity shipments mainly between Cincinnati and Pittsburgh, but can go much further in either direction on the river if needed. We take great pride in our towboat fleet and run a "tight ship" in regards to regular maintenance and upkeep to ensure our boats' seaworthiness, safety, and ability to arrive on schedule.

Although we specialize in liquid petroleum shipments, our area of expertise is constantly growing and changing. At AM&O Towing, our real strength comes from our ability to be flexible and change with the ever shifting landscape of business and commerce over time. We are always open to new customers and their river shipping needs. If you have questions about the feasibility of bulk shipping a product not listed above, don't hesitate to call us with your needs and get a shipping quote.
Services
In 1968, Captain William "Bill" H. Price Jr., founded AM&O Towing Inc. as a family company.
Captain Bill, at the age of 14, began his river career working with his father, Captain William H. Price, Sr., as a deckhand on stern wheel towboats.
Together, father and son did harbor work, consisting of shifting coal barges for an unloading terminal.
At the age of 20, Bill Jr. went to work on a 150-HP sternwheeler as a deckhand towing petroleum products, and for the next 12 years, learned the towing, loading, and unloading aspects of petroleum barges.
The main focus of our business is moving bulk commodity barge shipments between Cincinnati, OH and Pittsburgh, PA.
These consist primarily of crude oil, finished petroleum products, fertilizer, grain, and coal, but occasionally we move special freight that is extremely heavy or oversized.
As a rule, shipping large power transformers, oversized or heavy equipment, and other miscellaneous items is much more cost effective on a barge than moving them by truck.
It has been our goal at AM&O Towing to continue to grow our barge company while supporting as many Ohio River based businesses as possible.

We are often asked how deep the Ohio River is when people see the size of barges and towboats up close.
The answer is, that it depends on where you are on the river.
On the Northeastern side of Ohio where we are located, the river depth fluctuates between around 12 feet deep to 20 feet deep with a flood stage of 36 feet.
As companies struggle to find ways to remain competitive, while staying in compliance with the ever-growing Federal regulations placed on businesses year after year, waterway shipping has emerged as a leader in fuel efficient shipping making it the "green transportation" king!
The winner in this category is calculated by comparing the amount of BTU's (fuel) needed to carry one ton of freight one mile (also known as a ton-mile).
By reducing the amount of traffic, congestion, fuel consumption and spills, barge shipping has proven to beat all other modes of freight transportation in terms of greenhouse gas emissions according to studies conducted by the Center for Ports & Waterways since the 1990s; says the National Waterways Foundation.
