Kindra Lake Towing was established in 1992 by John Kindra with the purchase of 3 tugs. Today the company has 3 Lake tugs and 2 harbor boats and several deck barges. Our services include moving river hopper barges between South Chicago and the docks and terminals in Burns Harbor, Gary, Buffington and Indiana Harbor in northwest Indiana as well as barge towing and transportation between Lemont and South Chicago.

We provide Coast Guard approved fleeting areas for tank barges as well as marine equipment and services for special projects. In 2020, a 1200 ton drydock was purchased to provide repairs to boats and barges outside of our own equipment. Our cleaning and repair division, Kindra Marine, has been cleaning barges and doing cover handling since 1983. We have always done topside repairs and fiberglass cover repairs and the drydock now allows us to do more work for our customers.
Services
Kindra Lake Towing began in 1992 moving river barges between South Chicago and the steel mills, docks and grain elevator in Burns Harbor, Gary and Indiana Harbor on Lake Michigan.
Since those early years, the company has expanded with the addition of two boats and specialized barges.
In addition, we provide service between Lemont and Chicago as well as services for special projects on the Chicago River and the Cal Sag.
Kindra Lake Towing has a Coast Guard approved fleeting area for tank barges at our 98th Street office location as well as in Lake Calumet.
We have the capacity to moor over width and over length barges as well as conventional size hopper barges.
Our harbor tugs provide shifting services between our fleets and the docks and terminals on the Calumet River.
Kindra Lake Towing charters barges and tugs to many industries for use in projects in Chicago as well as northwest Indiana, Milwaukee and on the Illinois River.
This includes deck barges of various sizes for hauling stone and equipment, for construction and demolition projects, and for bridge painting.
We supply sectional barges for non-navigational waterway projects as well as environmental projects.
With the addition of the 1200 ton drydock in 2020, the repair division, Kindra Marine, now can drydock river hopper barges, deck barges up to 40 feet wide and tugboats.
Previously only topside repairs could be done.
Our welders are American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) certified.
In addition to the steel repairs, we repair fiberglass covers.
The repair group has 2 crawler cranes for cover handling.
